Slow Garden Moments in Winter 🌧🌿 Lazy Gardening for Healthy Soil & Creating a Rosemary Topiary
Today's video is all about the slow moments we've been enjoying in the garden throughout winter. In winter, I'm trying to focus on soil health, and prepping all of the garden beds for spring when the weather warms up. This also means maintaining all of the established trees and shrubs on the property - giving them a prune when needed and using these trimmings to create even more soil and food for our plants. It's also a time for me to really focus on creating beauty in the garden. Something I've wanted to try for a long time is creating a rosemary topiary - so today I'm giving it a go and I'll keep you updated on how it grows!

Hey there!
Welcome to my channel, The Nature Patch where I like to share all things gardening, cooking, environmental science and flower farming in my Australian bushland backyard in south coast NSW.
My name is Robyn, an environmental scientist, and flower farmer. I have recently completed my PhD in understanding how people's wellbeing and their connection to nature is impacted by land use change but now I'm taking a break from research to pursue a dream of owning a flower farm. I've always loved gardening and nature and lately have been interested in growing my own organic food!
On this channel you'll find videos relating to garden tours, 'how to' videos, composting, soil health and how to start a flower farm.
I try to upload twice a week and I hope you enjoy!!

    With your hardwood cutting have you tried honey as a rooting hormone since using it I have had much better results. Like you no food at the moment other than onion greens. The frost of the last week has killed a lot off the rainbow chard is still growing well as are the onions and garlic.I will be late in my planting this year as I hope to be away .here in the Dandenong ranges the weather has been very cold so not much growth or yard work the calendula are still flowering much to my surprise and bulbs have started to flower nerines nearly finished and the jonquil just started like yours. Just found your channel at last I am getting to find Australian gardens not USA or uk nothing wrong with them except I want more info on Australian time lines, have found a couple of Victoriaian ones thank heavens.

    Relaxing video. Thankyou Robyn. We truly love our gardens and I, too, am enjoying the slow pace in the garden during Winter. I live in Melbourne Inner North and we are finally getting some rain. The soil was so dry. I harvested 10kg of limes, and boxes and boxes of lemons. We're enjoying the harvest of our oranges and mandarines. Winter is a beautiful season when you look close enough. It can easily be frowned upon. Happy Winter everyone!

    As a gardener in a high rainfall area with lots of clay I do two things. I raise everything I plant. I only dig the hole for the tree or shrub that is half the size needed and then build up soil into a mini raised bed. I then mulch it really well. I've not lost a shrub to being waterlogged since I started doing that. I have also dug a drainage trench to the edge of the block and it runs the water off to the drain next door.

    We got hit with our first real frost last night. Luckily, the only things that seemed to have noticeable damage were potatoes in pots. It's probably due to their location I guess. I've got a big cleanup planned for tomorrow. Don't give up on that rhubarb it might come back. I had one I thought the crown had rotted but it regrew around the original crown. Cheers!

    It's been ages since I saw your notification come up... so glad I've found you again. Congratulations on the baby news. I think the ground cover is actually a native called Dichondra. Probably the microcalyx variety... I prefer the dichondra silverfalls and I actually plant it as a grass replacement. You might find the runners don't die under mulch... Your garden is looking great... I'm in the subtropics and it's the cooler dry season so I think it is the best time of year to garden.

    • @thenaturepatch

      Honestly, I don't think it did... Usually people were either buying food or flowers, rarely did they buy both at the same time :) But it did help to bulk up our stall when we were low on flowers.

    @daninic9355 12 днів тому

    If this helps, potatoes are like tomatoes, they are determinate or indeterminate. You don’t need to top up the determinate kind as they only grow in one layer (just make sure they have enough cover towards the end so they don’t go green). The indeterminate kind will grow in many layers as you cover. Really enjoy watching your channel 😊

    I hadn't realized your soil had so much clay content. You've obviously done a brilliant job at improving it. Do you have any fruit trees planted in the clay? I had been wanting to plant an orchard in my backyard, but have just discovered that perhaps I should have taken up pottery instead of gardening, as we also have very high clay content, similar to what you showed. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I'd love to hear your advice on planting fruit trees on a site like this. Is it worth attempting to improve the soil if it's heavy and often waterlogged clay? I'm starting to think of importing some soil and building mounds right on top so it has some chance at drainage, but I'm worried about tap roots reaching hard pan and the trees dying a few years down the track. I really don't want to go down the raised bed avenue, but maybe I'll have to. Oh, hearing about your slug problems... I heard a great tip from Angela of Parkrose Permaculture on UA-cam (also a great channel!). She mentioned she'd had success with deterring slugs by putting hair cuttings down around your vulnerable plants. I've been cutting my family's hair since covid, so we get regular trimmings for the garden and the daisies and snow peas and sweet peas have all either avoided or seen a drastic reduction in their slug pressure. Hope it helps you too. Lovely video. Thank you!

      @thenaturepatch 9 днів тому

      Thanks Siobhan! So the only fruit trees I've planted have been feijoas. I had heard that they do quite well in clay and so many people around in our area have luck with them. Before we moved to the property, my grandparents had a lot of luck with citrus on the property, which also don't mind heavy clay as they uptake a lot of nutrients from the surface, and not too far down where the bulk of the clay is. Berries have also done brilliantly on the property. I think continuing to build soil around the base of the fruit trees as well as planting plants that are dynamic accumulators (such as comfrey and many green manures) also would help out the soil :) I"ll have to check out Angela's channel, thanks! And I'll make sure to try that out next time we need a haircut! Cool tip!

    Gardening fashion is the best. I went to a working bee for replenishing the gardens at my kids' school this morning and everyone got to see my very best gardening attire. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Yes yes yes to the cork screw compost turner. They are life changing! I bought one shortly after I moved into this property, where we have a big liquid ambar tree, which drops masses of leaves every year. This deciduous tree has completely changed my composting game. With having an abundance of browns that I can gradually add to the compost over the year, the compost is never soggy anymore. I can't recommend it enough. Fertilizer Friday is Genius! I'm borrowing that one. 😊

    That was so much water! Eeep! You've done so well with how you've arranged things in a way that it doesn't all get swept away. Kudos. I was wanting to ask if you have any fruit trees and if so, how they're faring after this most recent deluge. We have heavy clay soil too and I hadn't realized that where I want to plant all the fruit trees used to be a creek bed. The local council diverted the water into pipes under ground several years back, but there's still a lot of water that collects in that area. I'm hoping to build up hugelkultur style garden beds to plant the trees in, hoping that this will be sufficient to prevent them from getting too waterlogged. Do you have any experience with this? I'm worried that all the trees will die from being too wet. So glad you're feeling so much better and the nausea is subsiding. Second trimester can be fantastic.

You mentioned that you used to live here in Sth East QLD. I live near Dulong on the Sunshine Coast. We have a cooler microclimate here, as we are away from the coast by about 16km, in the foothills of the range. Our nighttime temps are below 10 C. and between 14 to 22C by day. July will be colder, unless it rains.
